  1. Music by the Numbers From Pythagoras to Schoenberg Eli Maor, "Music by the Numbers: From Pythagoras to Schoenberg" 2018 | ISBN-10: 0691176906 | 176 pages | PDF | 26 MB How music has influenced mathematics, physics, and astronomy from ancient Greece to the twentieth century Music is filled with mathematical elements, the works of Bach are often said to possess a math-like logic, and Igor Stravinsky said "musical form is close to mathematics," while Arnold Schoenberg, Iannis Xenakis, and Karlheinz Stockhausen went further, writing music explicitly based on mathematical principles. Yet Eli Maor argues that music has influenced math at least as much as math has influenced music. Starting with Pythagoras, proceeding through the work of Schoenberg, and ending with contemporary string theory, Music by the Numbers tells a fascinating story of composers, scientists, inventors, and eccentrics who played a role in the age-old relationship between music, mathematics, and the sciences, especially physics and astronomy. Music by the Numbers explores key moments in this history, particularly how problems originating in music have inspired mathematicians for centuries. Perhaps the most famous of these problems is the vibrating string, which pitted some of the greatest mathematicians of the eighteenth century against each other in a debate that lasted more than fifty years and that eventually led to the development of post-calculus mathematics. Other highlights in the book include a comparison between meter in music and metric in geometry, complete with examples of rhythmic patterns from Bach to Stravinsky, and an exploration of a suggestive twentieth-century development: the nearly simultaneous emergence of Einstein's theory of relativity and Schoenberg's twelve-tone system. Weaving these compelling historical episodes with Maor's personal reflections as a mathematician and lover of classical music, Music by the Numbers will delight anyone who loves mathematics and music. 2. Music A Very Short Introduction Nicholas Cook, "Music: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)" ISBN: 0192853821 | 2000 | EPUB | 152 pages | 4 MB This stimulating Very Short Introduction to music invites us to really think about music and the values and qualities we ascribe to it. The world teems with different kinds of music-traditional, folk, classical, jazz, rock, pop-and each type of music tends to come with its own way of thinking. Drawing on a wealth of accessible examples ranging from Beethoven to Chinese zither music, Nicholas Cook attempts to provide a framework for thinking about all music. By examining the personal, social, and cultural values that music embodies, the book reveals the shortcomings of traditional conceptions of music, and sketches a more inclusive approach emphasizing the role of performers and listeners. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. 3. On Music, Value and Utopia: Nostalgia for an Age yet to Come? On Music, Value and Utopia: Nostalgia for an Age yet to Come? Rowman & Littlefield | English | 2018 | ISBN-10: 1786606046 | 156 pages | PDF | 909 KB by Stan Erraught (Author) Adorno's writings are often the starting point for the teaching of popular music studies, usually passing swiftly on, after concluding that 'he didn't listen to the right jazz' or 'he was a snob'. In this book, using Adorno's aesthetic theory more generally, a viable philosophical approach to the study of idiomatic, non- standard music is constructed. The links between Adorno's work and its Kantian roots are explored, and a more general and inclusive aesthetic constructed, using the utopian and implicitly political elements in each. This book will be of interest to critical theorists and musicologists wishing to build a more engaged practice without the pitfalls of a by now outdated 'postmodern' turn. Review Neither Kant, because he disparages music, nor Adorno, because he despises the culture industry, seem promising starting points for an investigation into the aesthetics of pop. But Stan Erraught conjures up a very Kantian Adorno to find redemptive value in contemporary commercial sounds and provide useful philosophical ballast for all those who wish to take popular music seriously. (Mark Abel, Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton and Author of Groove: An Aesthetic of Measured Time) In this subtle and thoughtful book, Stan Erraught stages a dialogue between popular music and the aesthetic theories of Kant and Adorno. Despite Adorno's hostility to popular music, Erraught uses Kant's and Adorno's ideas to argue that popular music has positive value. Erraught also shines new light on Kant and Adorno by re-reading their work in light of developments in popular music. This highly original study will interest readers from popular music studies as well as from aesthetics and philosophy of music. (Alison Stone, Professor of European Philosophy, Lancaster University) Erraught contends that popular music-not Mozart or Beethoven-powerfully exemplifies the paradoxes of music's ineffability. To support his claim, he stages a novel conversation between Kant and Adorno that helps us grasp the philosophical significance of musical genres that transfix us with their intensity. The result is elegant, comparative, and wide-ranging in all the right ways. (Michael Gallope, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota) Stan Erraught has achieved what was once unthinkable: the productive rehabilitation and extension of Adorno's aesthetics by means of popular music. Returning to the Kantian foundations of Adorno's thought, Erraught shows the untapped potential for pop to exemplify and challenge utopian thinking, thereby recovering a promesse du bonheur for these dark times. (Ryan Dohoney, Assistant Professor of Musicology at Northwestern University) About the Author Stan Erraught is Principal Lecturer in Media and Creative Industries at Buckinghamshire New University. http://nitroflare.com/view/1E4D20BC2C6E52B/On_Music%2C_Value_and_Utopia.pdf https://rapidgator.net/file/30b065fe3e782693ead8cc37f9420fba/On_Music__Value_and_Utopia.pdf.html

  8. Music at the Gonzaga Court in Mantua Music at the Gonzaga Court in Mantua by Donald Sanders English | 2012 | ISBN: 073916726X | 200 Pages | PDF | 6.3 MB Beginning in the second half of the fifteenth century, under the patronage of the Gonzaga family, the northern Italian city of Mantua became a vibrant center for visual art, theatre, and music. Beginning in the second half of the fifteenth century, under the patronage of the Gonzaga family, the northern Italian city of Mantua became a vibrant center for visual art, theatre, and music. The performance at the Gonzaga court of Poliziano's Fabula di Orfeo, around 1480, marked the beginning of secular music theatre. The use of musical numbers within the drama anticipated the beginnings of opera at Florence a century later, as well as the first masterpiece of the genre, Monteverdi's La favola d'Orfeo at Mantua in 1607. Mantua reached the zenith of its artistic distinction during the reign of Duke Vincenzo I, between 1587 and 1612. During this time, Wert and Gastoldi were joined at the court by the important Jewish composer Salamone Rossi and, most notably, by Monteverdi. The premieres of his Orfeo and Arisanna made the Gonzaga court, for that brief period, the most important center in the development of opera. In Music at the Gonzaga Court in Mantua, Donald C. Sanders discusses musical composition at the court in the context of the brilliant visual art that provided such a conducive environment. Sanders also traces the history of this very colorful family and their relationships with the emperors, kings, and popes who shaped modern Europe. Part history, part musicology, Sanders' analysis spans the fifteenth century through the seventeenth century, filling informative gaps with details essential for students in courses on Renaissance or Baroque music, or in more specialized courses on madrigal, opera, or liturgical music. Music at the Gonzaga Court in Mantua is also important reading for knowledgeable musical amateurs and anyone with interest in Italian history and arts. 13. Music As Medicine The History of Music Therapy Since Antiquity Music As Medicine: The History of Music Therapy Since Antiquity by Peregrine Horden English | 2000 | ISBN: 1840142995 | 416 Pages | PDF | 31.5 MB Music, whether performed or heard, has been seen as therapeutic in the history of many cultures. Music, whether performed or heard, has been seen as therapeutic in the history of many cultures. How have its therapeutic properties been conceptualized and explained? Which cultures have used music therapy? What were their aims and techniques, and how much continuity is there between ancient, medieval and modern practice? These are the questions addressed by the essays in this volume. They focus on the place of music therapy in European intellectual, medical and musical traditions, from their classical roots to the development of the music therapy profession since the Second World War. Chapters covering the Judaic, Islamic, Indian and South-East Asian traditions add global, comparative perspectives. Music as Medicine is the first book to establish the whole shape of the history of music therapy in a systematic and scholarly way. It addresses the problem of defining what music therapy has meant in different cultures and periods, and sets the agenda for future research in the subject. It will appeal to a diverse readership of historians, musicologists, anthropologists, and practitioners. 15. Music-in-Action Selected Essays in Sonic Ecology Music-in-Action: Selected Essays in Sonic Ecology (Ashgate Contemporary Thinkers on Critical Musicology Series) by Tia DeNora 2011 | ISBN: 1409419967 | English | 224 pages | PDF | 4 MB This volume brings together DeNora's work published between 1986 and 2007. It includes thirteen essays, some of which have had a major impact on the field. The chapters trace the development of her work from its early concern with musical meaning, historical ethnography and the 'everyday' perspective, to its current focus on music in action. Topics covered include Adorno on Schoenberg and Stravinsky, a theory of music as a space and place for interpretive work, research methods for historical musicology, and the first key statement of her theory of music as an active ingredient in social life. These building blocks are then employed to investigate music and embodied experience, sexuality and gender differentiation, and music's role as a technology of health. The essays are set in a multi-disciplinary context with an autobiographical introduction. 16. Music, Structure, Thought Selected Essays Music, Structure, Thought: Selected Essays (Ashgate Contemporary Thinkers on Critical Musicology Series) by James Hepokoski 2009 | ISBN: 0754628523 | English | 378 pages | Scan PDF | 35 MB Among the most original and provocative musicological writers of his generation, James Hepokoski has elaborated new paradigms of inquiry for both music history and music theory. Advocating fundamental shifts of methodological reorientation within the quest for potential musical meanings, his work spans both disciplines and offers substantial challenges for each. At its core is the conviction that a close study of musical genres, procedures, and structures"those qualities of a composition that are specifically musical"is essential to any responsible hermeneutic enterprise. Selected from writings from 1984 to 2008, this collection of essays provides a generous introduction to the author's most innovative and influential work on a wide variety of topics: musicological methodology, issues of staging and performance, Italian opera, program music, and exemplary studies of individual pieces. 18. Music by the Numbers: From Pythagoras to Schoenberg Eli Maor, "Music by the Numbers: From Pythagoras to Schoenberg" 2018 | ISBN-10: 0691176906 | 176 pages | PDF | 26 MB How music has influenced mathematics, physics, and astronomy from ancient Greece to the twentieth century Music is filled with mathematical elements, the works of Bach are often said to possess a math-like logic, and Igor Stravinsky said "musical form is close to mathematics," while Arnold Schoenberg, Iannis Xenakis, and Karlheinz Stockhausen went further, writing music explicitly based on mathematical principles. Weaving these compelling historical episodes with Maor's personal reflections as a mathematician and lover of classical music, Music by the Numbers will delight anyone who loves mathematics and music. http://nitroflare.com/view/018B3B7CB455CF8/0691176906.pdf https://rg.to/file/1b3eaa7d7b6fe1e258506c39ef3d9808/0691176906.pdf.html
  19. Music and Its Secret Influence Throughout the Ages Music and Its Secret Influence: Throughout the Ages by Cyril Scott English | 21 Feb. 2013 | ISBN: 1594774870 | 224 Pages | AZW3 | 454.17 KB Reveals how a hierarchy of initiates, evolved spiritual intelligences, and devas actively influenced the musical compositions of geniuses to transmit great truths through music Explores the influence of the classical composers Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Wagner, and Strauss from Beethoven's influence on the creation of psychoanalysis to Chopin's musical influence on the emancipation of women Composer and author Cyril Scott explores the role of music in the evolution of humanity and shows how it has pushed human evolution forward. He explains that music has a profound effect on history, morals, and culture and is a more potent force in the moulding of character than religious creeds or moral philosophies. Whereas mediocre musicians reflect only their own times, inspired ones help determine the character of the future. Exploring the works of classical composers such as Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Wagner, and Strauss, Scott reveals how their compositions were actively influenced by a hierarchy of initiates, evolved spiritual intelligences, and devas to make the way fertile for human spiritual evolution. Scott explains how humans are composed not only of a physical body, emotional body, and a mental body but also a sensation body that acts as the bridge between the physical realm and the hierarchy of initiates. Scott shows how the music of great composers affects not only those listening but also society as a whole from Beethoven's influence on the creation of psychoanalysis to Chopin's musical influence on the emancipation of women. Music Theory III: Part Writing and Analysis Music Theory III: Part Writing and Analysis MP4 | Video: 1280x720 | 64 kbps | 48 KHz | Duration: 2 Hours | 211 MB Genre: eLearning | Language: English Making common sense out of the "rules" of music theory. Learn to Part Write and Analyze Tonal Music. This Part Writing and Analysis Course is the third of a series of courses that take the student from the very beginnings of musical understanding to getting an "A" in a college music theory class. You do not have to be a college student to take this course, but by the time you finish the series, it will be as if you had taken several semesters of classes. If you are going to take college music classes, this series will save you a considerable amount of stress and maybe even some tuition money. Students who have mastered music Fundamentals and Level II courses will now apply their skills to voice leading 4 part harmony in SATB format. The common "rules" of music theory are explained as constraints. We do what we need to do to make the sounds we want to hear. We avoid the sounds that we do not want to hear. The Fundamentals Course covers Pitch, Staff Notation, the Piano Keyboard, Modes, Major Scales and Key Signatures. The Intermediate Course covers Intervals, Minor Keys and Scales, Triads, Seventh Chords, Figured Bass, Roman Numeral Analysis, Time Signatures, Meter, Rhythm, Melodic Dictation This Advanced Course covers 4-part voice leading and basic analytical techniques. The Lectures can be viewed in an afternoon. However, as with many subjects, it is the consistent practice that internalizes the knowledge so that it becomes second nature. To this end I have included dozens of worksheets and audio files for practice with each lesson. Working with a friend, parent, or partner can be very effective in keeping this practice motivated. You will need a printer and an MP3 player of some kind to do the practice work. Having a piano keyboard nearby to practice on will also greatly accelerate learning. Mastery of the the complete series may take as little as six months or as long as two years. The Part Writing and Analysis Course is normally taught in 9-18 weeks. http://nitroflare.com/view/D6F138DE0EDAD10/Music_Theory_III_Part_Writing_and_Analysis.part1.rar http://nitroflare.com/view/0E73A7F60C9395C/Music_Theory_III_Part_Writing_and_Analysis.part2.rar http://nitroflare.com/view/EEDA0541DD915D7/Music_Theory_III_Part_Writing_and_Analysis.part3.rar https://rapidgator.net/file/e2e968ae95a4a443926b03d898e9da14/Music_Theory_III_Part_Writing_and_Analysis.part1.rar.html https://rapidgator.net/file/4c0b21a730061ced120100b012d9dca8/Music_Theory_III_Part_Writing_and_Analysis.part2.rar.html https://rapidgator.net/file/6cbe68f31afe6f521bd1a4246209c372/Music_Theory_III_Part_Writing_and_Analysis.part3.rar.html If you like my post leave "thanks" or click on like button.

  25. "Music: Numinous and Mathematics. Form and Analysis Through Fourier Space" ed. by Eva Li Computational Music Science Series EvaLi | 2018 | ISBN: 4048197053 9784048197052 | 950 pages | PDF | 85 MB This volume brings new ideas to the conundrum by taking up certain philosophers not usually cited in connection with music and the classical Greek notion of process. The book explains the state of the art in the use of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of musical structures such as rhythms or scales. The book opens up an original approach to the transcendent and, to many, the sacred quality heard in music, drawing both upon authorities concerned with the numinous (that feeling of awe and attraction behind religious experience) and upon his own lifelong engagement with music as scholar, teacher and composer. From Ancient Greek times, music has been seen as a mathematical art, and the relationship between mathematics and music has fascinated generations. This collection of wide ranging, comprehensive and fully-illustrated papers, authorized by leading scholars, presents the link between these two subjects in a lucid manner that is suitable for students of both subjects, as well as the general reader with an interest in music. Physical, theoretical, physiological, acoustic, compositional and analytical relationships between mathematics and music are unfolded and explored with focus on tuning and temperament, the mathematics of sound, bell-ringing and modern compositional techniques. Understanding the way music unfolds to the listener is a major key for unlocking the secrets of the composer's art. Musical Form and Analysis, highly regarded and widely used for two decades, provides a balanced theoretical and philosophical approach that helps upper-level undergraduate music majors understand the structures and constructions of major musical forms. Spring and Hutcheson present all of the standard topics expected in such a text, but their approach offers a unique conceptual thrust that takes readers beyond mere analytical terminology and facts. Evocative rather than encyclopedic, the text is organized around three elements at work at all levels of music: time, pattern, and proportion. Well-chosen examples and direct, well-crafted assignments reinforce techniques. A 140-page anthology of music for in-depth analysis provides a wide range of carefully selected works. The book explains the DFT of pitch-class distributions, homometry and the phase retrieval problem, nil Fourier coefficients and tilings, saliency, extrapolation to the continuous Fourier transform and continuous spaces, and the meaning of the phases of Fourier coefficients. This is the first textbook dedicated to this subject, and with supporting examples and exercises this is suitable for researchers and advanced undergraduate and graduate students of music, computer science and engineering.
