[codebox]The role of spain

This was spain before the reign of isabella the catholic, a reign often characterized as disastrous, inasmuch as it destroyed that
harmonious multicultural world which would never return. One cannot help being dumbfounded at the expulsion of such an achieved society,
with all its civilization and refinement, an exile brought about by a political power dedicated to blindness. What suvives of it links us
to another realm, proving that cultural eclecticism can be more than a mere dream. The drem is made manifest in the great mosque in
cordoba, a masterpiece of umayyad architecture erected 785 and 987 in the alhambra, the seat of the moorish kings at granada. Carpets
were woven at cuenca, were they came forth as the fruits of a peaceful life among different communities, societies with a taste for spices
and redolent of their sweet odor. İn design, mosaic organized about a central fountain or crystal, overall safran in color and earthily
alive to the touch. S. 14-15.
The birth of carpets in france

By the 13th century france had imported quantities of oriental objects, ivories, and fine fabrics adding wealth to the treasuries of
cathedrals and monasteries while also introducing beauty into many a princely dwelling. Orientral carpets had also been welcomed. As
we know from a contemporary manuscrpt register with an entry for a “saracen tapestry”. From these carpets were born the so-called
“millefleurs” tapestries, europe’s earliest response to the power of the imports, like the english, the frech did not distinguish
particularly between tapestryes, carpets, and table covers. Later, the carpets of the lois XIII. period drew on the same sources as
those used in oriantal rugs. İn the second half of the 17th century, Louis XIV made french carpets and tapestry instruments of his
grandeur and the brilliance of his reign. The monarch began by appropriating the remarkable team of artists assembled by nicolas fouquet,
after which he commissioned the savonnerie workshop, founded in 1601, to weave ninety-three carpets fort he grande galerie at louvre.
Delivered in 1689, these Works were the largest contribution the savonnerie factory would ever maket o the embellishment of the royal
palaces. Like the grandiose buildings erected fort he sun king, the carpets helped assure that sense of gloire Louis so determinedly sought
for himself and for france.
