Acele etse hiç fena olmayacaktı. Gittikçe ağırlaşan adımlarla kapının önüne geldiğinde ise durdu ve çömeldi. Kapının hemen arkasında neyle karşılaşacağını az çok tahmin edebiliyordu. İnsan vücudunu siber teknolojiyle buluşturan biyoteknoloji devi Sarif Industriesin üretim tesisinde en son kattaki en son odanın önünde duruyordu. Şirketin en değerli prototip örneğini, kendilerine Purist diyen haydutların elinden kurtarmayı başarmıştı. Kafasında yeni soru işaretleri vardı ve sıra liderleri Zekei ele geçirmeye gelmişti. Kapının hemen ardındaydı... Ancak o, kapıyı açıp içeri dalmak yerine oracıkta, kapının hemen yanındaki duvarın dibinde çömelmiş duruyordu. Tavandaki yarım yamalak çalışan yangın söndürücünün püskürttüğü su, yüzünden akarken Einsteinın meşhur sözü geçiyordu aklından: Teknolojik gelişme patolojik bir suçlunun elindeki baltaya benzer... Bir süredir kafası bu sözle meşguldü... Güvenlik şefi olarak çalıştığı Sarif Industriese altı ay önce düzenlenen kanlı saldırıyı engelleyememiş, dahası vücudunun büyük bir kısmını kaybetmiş ve kafasından vurulmuştu. Tahmin ettiğinden çok daha derin bir komplonun içine düşmüştü. Yine de Zeke birçok sorunun anahtarına sahipti ve şu an tam karşısında duruyordu, çözülmeyi bekleyen bir rehine problemiyle birlikte. Tesisin sorumlusu Josie, korsan bandıyla kapalı olmayan gözünden öfke fışkıran Zekein elindeydi. Öfkeli adam silahını kapı açılır açılmaz savunmasız kadının kafasına dayamıştı bile... Bu anda kolay olanı seçip Zekein Josieyi de alarak gitmesine izin verebilirdi. Lakin acil çıkış kapısının diğer tarafında bekleyen ağır silahlı SWAT güçleri, durumu her ikisi için de sevimsiz kılabilirdi. Zekei kadını bırakması için konuşarak ikna etmeye çalışmak da bir seçenekti. Adamın öfkeden kudurmuş olduğunu düşününce bu pek kolay değildi tabii. Bir an için kıvrak bir hamleyle Zekein üstüne atlayıp etkisiz hale getirebileceğini düşündü ya da ani bir refleksle kaşlarının tam ortasından vurabileceğini... Zekein sözlerinde gizli olan ipuçlarını düşününce bir anda silindi bu seçenek kafasından.... Silahını normal bir gözün algılayamayacağı kadar hızlı çekti. Korkudan titreyen çaresiz kadını vurdu. Zeke şok içinde Adam Jensena bakakaldı. Jensen, Zekei canlı ele geçirmişti. Ama Josienin kocası bu durumdan hiç ama hiç hoşlanmayacaktı... Milenyumun ilk yaz ayında tanıştığımız Deus Ex için tüm zamanların en saygı değer yapımlarından biri desek, hatta 2000li yılların en iyi beş oyunu arasında göstersek kesinlikle abartmış olmayız. 90ların ikinci yarısında FPS mekanikleriyle cyberpunk ve RPG öğelerini birleştirerek büyük bir devrime imza atan System Shocktan ödünç aldığı harika konsepti, Warren Spectorun yaratıcı dehası ve bizleri bir küresel komplo teorisinin içine sürükleyen gerilimli hikayesi dışında Deus Exi bu denli büyük yapan bir şey daha vardı. Tamamen oynayış tarzımıza ve tercihlerimize göre şekillenen eşsiz bir deneyim sunmak gibi. Oyun boyunca karşılaştığımız sorunlar beraberinde keşfedilmeyi bekleyen farklı farklı çözüm yollarıyla geliyor; her bir bölümde hedefe ulaşmamız için alternatif yollar bulabiliyor ve bunlar bizi yeni alternatif yollar keşfedebileceğimiz bambaşka alternatif yollarla buluşturuyordu (!?). Karakterimizi nanoteknolojinin en futuristik ve havalı örnekleriyle donatıp dilediğimiz gibi geliştirebiliyor, kullanacağımız silahları da gönlümüzce özelleştirebiliyorduk. Görevleri tamamlarken dilersek doğrudan şiddete başvurabiliyor; gürültü patırtıdan pek hoşlanmıyorsak da işlerimizi tamamen gizlilik kullanarak halledebiliyorduk. Etrafa ağır objeler fırlatarak güç gösterisi yapıp sonunda yakalanarak temiz bir sopa yemek de seçenekler arasındaydı pek tabii. Bu, oyuncu tercihleri ve bu tercihlerin sonuçları ile ilgili bir deneyimdi kısacası. Deus Ex ile haşır neşir olmuş herkes kendi kişisel deneyimini tatmış ve gerçek anlamda hafızalara kazınacak anlar yaşamıştı. Üç yıl sonra çıkan devam oyunu Deus Ex: Invisible War da özgür oynanışıyla ilk oyundaki anıları canlandıran benzer deneyimler sunmayı başardı oynayanlara, geniş kitlelere hitap edebilmek adına RPG öğeleri hafifletilmiş, bir başka deyişle sığlaştırılmış bir oyun olmasına rağmen.
