The last two are the compressor and limiter, respectively. Just as is the case with the Waves plug-ins, they all share a common user interface design with similar controls; thus, once you learn to use one of them, you're pretty much up to speed on the rest. Although they are, in fact, VST plug-ins, that distinction has been nearly obliterated by the recent advent of various "wrappers" that allow MOTU Audio System (MAS) users to access them. In my own case, with Digital Performer, I simply used the TC PluginShell, which installed itself automatically during the Native Bundle installation. The TC Works Native Bundle uses the challenge/response-type authorization procedure. Some features common to all the TC Works Native Bundle's plug-ins are as follows: if you click on a parameter while holding the mouse button and move the mouse down, the value you are editing is decreased; mouse ups produce value increases. If you click on an edited parameter while holding down the Option key, the value is reset to the factory default as stored in the plug-in's ROM preset. If you double-click on a value field or a fader, a pop-up field for numeric data will open. ROM presets provide many useful setups as starting points for user tweaking. These presets tend to be in the standard "mastering" category rather than in the "out there" sound design vein. All the plug-ins have meters - usually showing both input and output levels - with adjustable peak hold capabilities. All the plug-ins, except for the Native Reverb, contain SoftSat, a proprietary algorithm that generates a soft harmonic distortion when clipping levels are approached, preventing the plug-ins from being excessively driven to the point of hard clipping. It supports multiple sample rates from 8 to 32 bit and sample resolutions up to 192KHz. It can import and export a range of audio formats and supports MP3 encoding and decoding. However, there's another section called Audio Montage which lets you drop audio clips onto additional tracks. The "FL Studio XXL" offer includes all optional components with a 40% price reduction. FL Studio uses its own extended internal plugin API but it can use VST, Buzz, ReWire and DirectX plugins via special adapter plugins, making it compatible with the vast majority of software synthesizers and effects processors. The demo version is fully functional, with the restriction of not being able to save projects for later work; it does, however allow projects to be exported to WAV or MP3 format. Also, not being able to access full versions of some plug-ins in the program is another restriction when using the demo product. As of version 7, FL Studio now supports multithreading and multiple-core processors.
